As part of the SUNYA zero waste project being carried out under CapaCITIES, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), dustbins for segregation of waste at source were distributed to the residents of ward 2 at the Margaret S.N English School in Siliguri.
The event was attended by Ms. Marylaure Crettaz, Head of the SDC in India, Dr. Shirish Sinha, Deputy Head of the SDC in India, the Mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Council (SMC), Mr. Asok Bhattacharya, Commissioner of the SMC, Mr. Sonam Bhutia, Secretary of the SMC, Mr. Saptarshi Nag, SMC Member Mayor in Council, Mr. Mukul Sengupta and the CapaCITIES team.
Two dustbins each, to segregate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable fractions of waste, were handed over to the residents. The biodegradable waste will be collected and transported to the composting facility in the city. The recyclables from the non-biodegradable fraction will be routed for recycling, while the remaining will be landfilled.
