Mr. Daniel Ziegerer, Head, Swiss Cooperation Office India, Mr. Shirish Sinha, Deputy Head, Swiss Cooperation Office in India, Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia and Mr. C. Sellakrishnan, Coimbatore city staff, ICLEI South Asia, met with the Principal Secretary to the Government, Municipal Administration & Water Supply Department and the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (TUFIDCO), Government of Tamil Nadu on 12th June 2017.
Mr. Shirish Sinha introduced the CapaCITIES project and elaborated on the proposed quick win and bankable projects, including the SUNYA replication, catchment study and sewage treatment plant design at the Singanallur lake, the solid waste management strategy and the air pollution monitoring system for Coimbatore.
While indicating their support to the CapaCITIES project, the senior officials stressed on the importance of documenting the learning and experiences from project implementation and disseminating this information to other cities to enable their progress in sustainable urban development. The city of Coimbatore was encouraged to approach TUFIDCO for financial assistance to implement the bankable projects that are developed under the CapaCITIES project. The need for building capacities of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to design and implement financially viable projects was highlighted; the State fully supports the participation of ULB officials in any such capacity development workshops/interventions.
