Water resources in urban areas of India are significantly stressed due to high water demand and complex consumption patterns within small but densely populated areas and local level solutions are essential for sustainable water management. Around 80% of the water supply flows back into the ecosystem as wastewater which is a critical environmental and health hazard. Proper treatment, management and reuse of wastewater will help cities in reducing their local water demand.

The CapaCITIES project is supporting Indian cities to include climate considerations while addressing service delivery challenges in water and waste water management sector:

    • Conducted scientific assessments for effective waste water management in Udaipur and for choosing the right technology to treat wastewater entering the Singanallur lake area in Coimbatore.
    • Technical assistance provided to Rajkot to understand potential in water augmentation and ground water recharge systems and in reuse of treated wastewater.
    • Installed Groundwater Recharge Systems at 5 locations in Rajkot as pilot demonstrations for city to scale-up.
    • Reduced the Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in Siliguri by providing two water leak detection machines.

Rajkot: The City lies in an arid zone and faces significant water stress during the summer months but during monsoon season its affected by flooding across several in the city.

Leak Detection Machines to Reduce Non Revenue Water (NRW)

Siliguri: CapaCITIES project provided two Acoustic Leak Detection Machines to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, and trained a team of engineers to operate them.

Technical Assistance

Assessment of Singanallur Lake to Evaluate the Right Technology for Wastewater Treatment

Coimbatore: Assessed the catchment area of Singanallur lake through a survey of the household waste water connections and lake water quality to determine relevant technology for treating the water before it enters the lakes to reduce pollution.

Strategic Action Plan for Waste Water Management and Treatment in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Under CapaCITIES project, a strategic action plan to reduce emissions from wastewater and to improve wastewater management in Coimbatore.

Assessment of the Potential for Augmentation of Local Water Resources in Rajkot

Rajkot: Groundwater levels and their quality were studied across Rajkot city, and the potential for local water resource augmentation and groundwater recharge was assessed under the CapaCITIES project.
