Development of organic waste to Bio CNG plant on public private partnership- under development

The City of Coimbatore generates around 1000 tons of waste everyday. More than 50% of the waste is organic and a sizable quantity of the organic waste is generated by bulk waste generators (hotels, restaurants etc). Coimbatore Municipal Corporation (CMC) has requested CapaCITIES to undertake project development for treatment of organic bulk waste.

The project is structured to be implemented through Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) format, wherein the private sector would be responsible for a) transport of bulk waste and b) implementation and operation of Bio CNG plant and the city would be responsible for leasing of land and provision of onsite infrastructure (compound wall, electric and water connections).

The project offers unique opportunity for converting waste into energy and paves way for implementation of circular economy i.e. the Bio CNG produced from organic waste can be used as fuel by hotel/restaurant operators. Thanks to the involvement of the private sector, latest technologies and technics will be applied, administration and management of the plants will be professionalized.

This private sector collaborationallows also the Corporation to invest more resources in other projects as Corporation would not be spending any money in treating bulk organic waste. The project is anticipated to reduce GHG emissions on account of methane avoidance and use of low carbon CNG produced by the plant.
