Development of Udaipur walled city into a Green Mobility Zone- under development

Udaipur is one of the major tourist attractions of Rajasthan. It attracts 0.9 million tourists annually. The walled city area which comprises of 5% of Udaipur Municipal Corporation area constitutes 20% of the total population of Udaipur. It houses around 1 lakh population and is also a major tourist attraction area. Based on the comprehensive Climate Resilient City Action Plan (CRCAP) developed for Udaipur under CapaCITIES-I, transportation sector is a major cause for GHG emissions in the city.

Considering the same, a concept for Green Mobility Zone (GMZ) in walled city of Udaipur is developed. Under the project, in the designated GMZ area only passenger electric vehicles (except stickered local resident vehicles) would be permitted to ply during designated hours. Electric freight vehicles also would be provided a priority access. Charging of electric vehicles through renewable energy would also be explored.

Reducing GHG emissions from the transport sector was recommended and this would also play a catalytic role in development of tourism in the city.

The project is structured to be implemented through Public Private Partnership(PPP) format, wherein the private sector would be responsible for operation and charging infrastructure of passenger electric vehicles and the city would be responsible for provision of parking infrastructure in peripheral areas of GMZ. It is also envisaged to engage with hotel association and other stakeholders in supporting the project.
